Taming Your Advice Monster
As a consultant and coach, your instinct is to give advice. But the best coaching happens when you help people think for themselves. Here are key principles:
✓ Ask Short, Clean Questions
One question at a time. No compound questions or hidden advice.
✓ Stick to 'What' Questions
Avoid 'why' questions which can sound judgmental.
✓ Get Comfortable with Silence
Let the coachee think. Don't rush to fill the silence.
✓ Actually Listen
Listen to understand, not to formulate your next question.
✓ Acknowledge Responses
Show that you've heard them before moving to the next question.
✓ Stop Offering Advice with a Question Mark
Don't disguise advice as questions. Example: 'Have you tried...?'
